PFI Freediver Course Overview
Elevate your breath-hold and explore new depths. This intermediate certification focuses on the core foundations of safety and technique for divers looking to reach greater depths with comfort and professional efficiency.
Depth Goals
Refine your technique to comfortably dive between 10m and 20m (33ft – 66ft), focusing on efficient equalization and deep-water relaxation.
Structure
Complete self-paced online learning, master breathing/safety skills in the pool, and then apply your skills across 2-4 open water training dives.
Performance & Safety Standards
Pre-Requisites
- Minimum age of 10 for Junior Freediver or 16 years for Freediver.
- Competent swimming skills.
- PFI Snorkeler or equivalent skill level.
Static Apnea (STA)
- 1m 30s minimum breath-hold
- Master calm oxygen management
- Demonstrate safety surface protocols
Dynamic Apnea (DYN)
- 30m underwater horizontal swim
- Focus on streamlined kicking form
- Successful turn and wall technique
Rescue Drills
- Rescue from a depth of 10m
- Management of surface recovery
- LMC and blackout response drills
Constant Weight (CWT)
- Dives to 16m–20m (52ft–66ft) depth
- Proper neutral buoyancy mastery
- Vertical descent and ascent form
Required Equipment
Low-Volume Mask
A low-volume freediving mask ensures easier equalization and a better seal during deep dives.
5-7mm Open Cell Wetsuit
Two-piece open-cell wetsuits with integrated hoods for warmth and superior flexibility in cool waters.
Freediving Snorkel
Simple J-style snorkel without purge valves for maximum safety and streamlined performance.
Rubber Weight Belt
A flexible rubber belt with quick-release buckle to maintain position and ensure emergency ditching.
Long Fins
Freediving blades (plastic, fiberglass, or carbon) designed for efficient propulsion with minimal effort.
Dive Computer
Required for monitoring depth, surface intervals, and dive times accurately during open water sessions.
